Jon Yu, guitar

Born in Taipei City, Taiwan, Jon Yu became passionate about music at a very young age. After moving to the United States with his family, he began studying guitar and playing music with local musicians. He attended University of California, Santa Cruz for his Bachelor of Arts degree in music and studied classical guitar under the guidance of Mesut Özgen. As a student, Jon performed numerous works from the classical repertoire, including that of J.S. Bach, Hector Villa-Lobos, and Robert de Visée, and participated in master classes with Dr. Robert Strizich. He was also an active member of the Santa Cruz Classical Guitar Orchestra and the Santa Cruz Guitar Quartet. These ensembles held frequent performances at the University Concert Hall, as well as other local community centers such as the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. In 2010, Jon graduated from UC Santa Cruz with Honors in Major and University Honors. He is currently pursuing his Masters degree in Music Composition at San Francisco State University, studying under Dr. Richard Festinger.

Having over 10 years of experience as a guitarist, Jon is familiar with a variety of musical genres and approaches, including classical, jazz, popular rock, experimental, and heavy metal. He also has an extensive theoretical background as a composer and can provide lessons on music theory, songwriting, and structural analysis. Jon customizes his lessons according to the proficiency level of each individual student, and focuses on the development of fundamental techniques and musicality. His lessons can also be provided in both English and Chinese Mandarin.
